During the beginnings of ORE the community decided that ranks gave a sense of maybe unprecedented superiority, so they decided against adding skill-based ranks.
Yeah, but I still remember my last ever experience on RDF where I was being called a noob by multiple people for being builder. The system was flawed at best.
We actually experimented with a more interesting, categorical rank rank system too. We decided against them in general, they make for too much conflict. Basically, everyone preceding me has said.
I'm against all rank systems that have a clear order of "wisedom"
I'm not against categorical system, but I think some categories will be placed above others.
And I think it will be rather hard to categorize in such a way that everyone is happy.

Every system we played with had pitfalls, and the overarching issue was that "promotions" are arbitrary at best. It's very hard to determine "quality."

I think I see what you're getting at, let's just give Treesin an awesome rank, and then close this discussion - ranks just cause too much trouble, unless they are given to Treesin.
