How's the lego technic going? I am too poor to buy it. I got plenty of lego as a kid but it was always space stuff cause I was obsessed with space travel. Although between you me and the fence post I secretly yearned for technic
We did get a huge bucket of second hand mechano and it was awesome but I was too stupid to build anything good with it 
I also had a radioshack 1001, with LEDs so feeble you would barely believe it nowadays. Probably they were made by hand lapping galena crystals or something They were about as bright as the glowing ember from a match when the flame goes out 
The wires were put together using jumpers and springs. You would bend the springs over and put the wire in the gaps and let it go and it would hang onto it. The whole thing was made out of cardboard but it cost a fortune! Then as a curious 10 year old I decided to wire all the points I could together and power it and destroyed almost all of the ICs and other semiconductors in it
I have also made things that didn't work with a 555
Now in my dotage I have an Arduino and I even made a LCD weather station until someone stole back the wall wart I was running it with
