[Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - ddthj - 08-03-2015 So I'm going to reattempt to dump all of my knowledge about the RDF into a narrative about the developing community. Unfortunately I joined the RDF in either late 2011 or 2012. Since it was founded in April of 2011, and I joined in either December or January, someone is going to have to fill me in on those early details. One thing I'd like from everyone is if they could dump what they know here in this thread as well, such as the start of the shenanigans subfourm or funny stories from any event or their experience when the RDF collapsed. I'm looking for any interesting experience or emotions or anything of the sorts that you think helps demonstrate the community at the time or how it evolved. Even if it is only from ORE, because it's not like I am online 24/7. For example, my trial on the RDF is a funny story (especially for you new students/builders who have only lived on ORE). My trial build was a couple sets of 4 D-Flip-Flops hooked to a 4 pixel 'display' (which was broken). I passed easily. This is when they still didn't have much of a student rush and were eagerly accepting members, so they pretty much let anything in. Please include what server + the rough date or events surrounding your post. EDIT: Here is the link to the new document. Was funny. I passed by building a 2 bit multiplier using a look up table. And also one xor gate that was an original design by Himehowareu. (He has it on YouTube.) June some time. RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Halflife390 - 08-04-2015 THE MELON TOASTER. On ORE only about a month or 2 ago, I discovered the "Builders Lounge" area of the server. My friend came on the server (hes not a member and isn't really that into redstone). We decided for no apparent reason to make a giant roller coaster/minecart track using melons and we decided to call it the Melon Toaster (A pun of Melon Coaster and Toaster Coaster). Before we knew it, my friend, who's not even a builder on the server, managed to get me and Qwerasd to build this giant coaster for him (as a visitor he could not build, only ride) and even managed to grab the attention of everyone on the server at the time (at least 10 ppl) so much everyone was there including all the admins and mods just too see what all the commotion was about. It was so funny! Even funnier though is that the finished coaster is actually really good, its bloody giant and takes at least 5 mins to transverse the whole thing! RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Magic :^) - 08-05-2015 woah i always wondered where that rollercoaster came from... heh this thread is already showing some promise I was going to post something shenannigans-related, but it looks like the related thread it's from has broken image links so it's all gone ;-; https://forum.openredstone.org/showthread.php?tid=5690 pauly if you see this, please find the picture D: anyhow: me, aerodynamicbrick, pauly, pablodons, nickster258, and about 3-4 others were all on teamspeak and were exploring some of the old CPU builds that were lying around. On a particular big blue one (i forget whose it is) aero decided to start building a statue and it, well, escalated by the end of it, there was two very blocky human-like shapes built. One standing, and one was uh.. bent over xD many a desecration was done (not to the cpu of course) and we took a group photo with the statues to commemorate the occasion. That photo is the one that was lost unfortunately. (this all happened 31 Jan, 2015. fairly recent, relatively speaking) RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Chibill - 08-05-2015 (08-05-2015, 02:24 AM)MagicalGentleman Wrote: woah i always wondered where that rollercoaster came from... heh this thread is already showing some promise I was also part of this I think.... :p RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Chibill - 08-05-2015 Also the day or so after I joined I crashed the server like 10 times in one day. And was threatened by Jessassin himself that if I crashed it one more time I would be banned. (Glowstone and WE are not a servers friend.) It was 'shitty peace of shit fuck shit goddamnit fuck v2.0' RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Magic :^) - 08-05-2015 oh yeah we signposted the statue xD and to list everyone from the picture, it's me, nickster, apuly, crazyninja2000, tuchi, LordDecapo, PabloDons and aero. RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Apuly - 08-05-2015 actually that's the name of the adder machine that the statue was build around. I named it. RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - PabloDons - 08-06-2015 And me magic xD RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Apuly - 08-06-2015 You had nothing to do with the naming of that machine. I also remember there being a few RDF quotes in there RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - newomaster - 08-11-2015 Some old RDF/RE trends/events that I know of (I'm probably forgetting a lot more)(I'm avoiding individual or group redstone projects (unless they were a community event) because there are too many to count): -Berick's Prelude of the Chambered 2 livestream -Antimatter energy boots -/fast -Long (2+ hour) philosophical discussions -Cakesmas -Survival CPU (done more than once, I don't remember when), basically we all joined a survival pvp server and built a CPU in survival. -/warp spawn taking you to an evil spawn -Plot of logic (original and new) -People signing the walls of other people's plots -The tunnels under jxu's old RDF plot (courtesy of redstonewarrior) -Redstonewarrior's secret bases (he had one on almost every plot) -Award trophies -Back when skill ranks were a thing (Builder, Engineer, Scientist, Guru) -Distinct phases of redstone (summarizing greatly here): (alpha/before pistons, piston craze (birth of the ICA, mass ICA designing), ICA perfected; birth of the CLE, Diagonal/Solid State phase (current phase) and analog/comparator. -Massive AFK boxes (afk boxing in general) -Xray Doc's Methlab (the original one, not the weird new one) Let me know if you need clarification. RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Halflife390 - 08-11-2015 Speaking of meth, before I took a years break from the server, so about a years and a half ago on ORE, I was just building away when someone came up to me. I cant remember who it was but they started chucking tons of potions (meth) at me than ran away really fast to go and do the same to others. The potions made you jump so stupidly high and run so stupidly fast that you couldn't actually press a button on the keyboard without traversing the map. We made a load of dispensers and got everyone in one place and just had a massive meth party, it was quite funny. I'm interesred in this old stuff :3 May not seem it to you, but to me this is all tasty lore RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - newomaster - 08-25-2015 The crossplot was exactly what it sounds like, it was a system of wires that ran across MANY plots (not unlike plans we have on ORE to make one now). I don't know any of the specifics on the technology used, but it was basically the legendary source of all lag on the server. If there was lag, the crossplot was the cause. Even to this day, the crossplot still causes 97.632% of all lag on the ORE server. RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Apuly - 08-25-2015 And now we're having plans to put cross-plot on a shyte ton of plots all around that map. GG ORE, GG. It was only a matter of time until I said this: It's not the FUCKING same as crossplot, because crossplot used FUCKING INSTAWIRE and intOREnet won't. Also my trial was pretty funny, I was building an RCA ALU, and maga was trailing me. Decapo (well before he was staff) told me to build a hot tub, so I did, and I put lava underneath it. Then, as we got to the question part, maga started asking me about the hot tub, and people were jumping on it, and someone accidentally broke it, and the lava leaked out onto my redstone and broke it xD. ~June 2014 RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Nickster258 - 08-27-2015 It's crossplot because it is taking up space across many plots. RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Chibill - 12-16-2015 RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - PabloDons - 12-16-2015 cool RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - RetiredFromLife - 12-19-2015 Got linked to this on Reddit, and I must say this is a decent account of history as far as the UTD and RDF go. Not super familiar with the ORE but it seems to be quite a large community. I'm the original founder of the UTD, originally the URC. A few details are wrong or omitted, but still good to know people give a damn about history. Corrections: -It's worth noting that both the RDF and the UTD had their own forums, for a time. The RDF's was far, far larger and more polished, the UTD simply didn't have anyone left effective at website and graphic design by the time the forum was constructed, very, very late in the game. -The UTD was not simply a server, rather just a group. In fact, many projects were built offline. Our server was primarily for showcases, very large projects, and just dicking around. At our peak we had over 100 members, and the majority of them did produce or assist in a project. Others managed co-operation with other modmakers and relations with the public. Our greatest engineer was actually a player who never stepped foot on any of our servers and would simply mail the schematics to me. -The UTD broke up primarily because of one conflict. The UTD had a system of distributed power, there were many approximately six to eight admins that served the function of a council. Whoever was around at the time, typically 3-4 people would be in charge of decisions, due to the nature of how difficult it is to organize a hundred people in different time zones. I, as founder, was the Head Admin. I had the same powers, but no vote could take place without me present. This worked until our server host, Hyphurr, staged a coup, and essentially blackmailing me. I took it to the council to expel this member, the vote was 2-1, to keep him. Things never went well after that, our reputation was tarnished by this members blowup and following drama. -Essentially all of the founders of the RDF came from UTD, in that list there are about 3 or 4 names I cannot recognize. I would say the reason for the split was not necessarily a difference in ideas, but rather miscommunication. I had great respect for Berick and Zaldarr, the two I remember most vividly. However, I always did sense a slight feeling of disrespect from them. I was young, and struggling with depression. My redstone abilities are adequate, but not remarkable. Perhaps they just felt they could do it better. I was perhaps bitter for a while, but not in a strictly serious way. Additional Info: I would describe the relationship between the RDF and UTD as competitive. We just each tried to do it better than the other. There were disputes over ownership, projects released by people who left from the RDF had to be settled by the admins of Project Minecraft, where we both hosted our files. After that was sorted, we entered a competitive relationship, rather than one of bitterness. I would say the RDF shined in producing much more polished projects, where the UTD's redstone machines, build projects, and even cannons were often huge, highly technical, and applying the "bigger and more powerful" is better. We at one point even had a 128 bit computer in the works that never got finished, would have been the first of its kind in Minecraft. A shame really. Anyway, thanks for the interesting read! RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - ddthj - 12-21-2015 Thanks so much for the info! RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - jxu - 01-15-2017 I'm kinda suprised there was no mention of our minor rivalry between TheVoxelBox before they died. Also we used to have PvP matches of NAIL (really old map) hosted by Alex or someone. Here's an album I compiled of old screenshots. I have many great memories of this server and I used to spend maybe 2-8 hours online every day (mostly AFK or chatting). RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Nickster258 - 01-18-2017 The NAIL days were fun. I remember that there was some push by some of us to get then administration to setup a NAIL server. RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Chibill - 01-18-2017 Yeah. I would host for some of us to have a game but my internet is so shit I can't (unless I do it while at school off my laptop.) RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Chibill - 01-18-2017 We could have a little game with the admins. ? RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - jxu - 01-20-2017 Well NAIL is already about 4 years old, but there are plenty of other maps. We could do NAIL for nostalgia. If everything goes well I will have access to a decently powerful server, so I may be able to host games (assuming I will still be active in the ORE community, which is not guaranteed ) RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - Chibill - 01-20-2017 I also revamped the map for 1.11 (did some rebalancing) RE: [Help Needed] History of ORE and the RDF - newomaster - 01-26-2017 (01-15-2017, 07:08 AM)͝ ͟ ͜ Wrote: I'm kinda suprised there was no mention of our minor rivalry between TheVoxelBox before they died. Thanks for including a crapton of my stuff xD, including projects I built on random other people's plots (sudoku, my tetris project I never finished, various cpus) (I feel like I built on other people's plots almost more than I did my own...). Also, that full conversation we had about the usefulness of redstone in real life seems almost prophetic now... I'm feeling my redstone experience help me every day now that I'm in college. I have some screenshots as well, but they are on my old computer, which got moved with the rest of my stuff when my family moved to California (I'm in Minnesota right now). I'll post them someday in the future. I'll quote my rdf scientist self (I dunno how long ago this was exactly, many years probs): "weird conversations are what we do" - newomaster I think that still holds true today. The original staff rule until mostly late 2013 when more came in and others resigned. Soon after the abolishment of "Foreman" (only to be replaced by mod in about 2 years). From Q2 2014 to near the end when Tyler was practically the lone admin doing everything. LordDickapo becomes admin and most everything didn't change at first (besides the fact that he kinda shifted ORE to be more and more open in the conversation department).
