event lists - PabloDons - 11-01-2014

this is a great (pun intended) idea to have me list the individual events

all suggestions will be taken into consideration

Build-offs
  • compacting competition:
both players get an overly huge machine and they have limited time to make it as compact as possible.
  • fastest machine:
both players get specifications on what their machine is going to do and the winner builds the fastest one (by largest possible process time)

CPU programming competition:
The contestants are given a programming problem which they have to implement on a pre-built working cpu. Best program wins. (designer of CPU is disqualified, but is allowed to participate in deciding the program challenge and the winner)

python/java programming competition:
Contenders try to fix python plugins. Staff team would be happy to reward the winner

others
suggestions very welcome

Best looking display for a device. Everyone gets the same device and they have to make a display and cover around it that appeals the most

RE: event lists - MelvinS4_ - 11-01-2014

Redstone cpu programming competition. The contestants are given a programming problem which they have to implement on a pre-built working cpu. Best program wins.

Whos building the CPU ( I guess i could build a simple 8 bit, but i would disqualify myself from the competition)?

We could just use one that already has been built (with permission of the builder of course) right? This also adds the interesting aspect of having a different cpu each time the competition is held. This would mean that the creator(s) of the cpu would not be allowed to participate since it's too much of a benefit to have designed it I feel.

RE: event lists - LordDecapo - 11-02-2014

What if like each time we do the programming one. The builder of the CPU, decides the programming challenge. So we know it will be able to run it. And that person Also gets to help vote and judge on a winner.

RE: event lists - Crazyninja2000 - 11-02-2014

how about, your build a cpu, and we have a list of programs you have to run. the winner is determined by the best and efficient program.

RE: event lists - Charles - 11-02-2014

First a question: Will there be team events?
Also what if in some cases you added a size limit on an axis? Like 2 block tall or wide, etc.

RE: event lists - Nuuppanaani - 11-02-2014

I'll suggest a programming competition.

Contenders try to fix our python plugins.

Staff team would be happy to reward the winner :33

On topic: I like the idea. Having the type of a CPU be a suprise would be cool. Like it could be an accumulator or a stack one etc. :p

1. why dafug not?

why dafug not? I mean it's going to be a win, win situation for everybody. Big Grin

RE: event lists - PabloDons - 11-03-2014

we actually have an arena built by gioattax on his plot so yay!!
anybody wanna start this up with the build-offs first? we got all we need, only thing now is a leaderboard which we can do in-game if nobody is willing to make a web based one (which would look a lot better in my opinion)

giotax's arena is tiny. for good buildoffs, i think we should claim a special plot, divide it down that each area is 8x8 chunks, so we have 4 arenas just if it is a buildoff more then 2 people.

RE: event lists - PabloDons - 11-04-2014

holy crap man, I doubt anybody is going to agree on a computer build-off complete with I/O. I was thinking things like decoders or small logic machines, there's lots of space

RE: event lists - Chibill - 11-04-2014

I am for anything like this.

RE: event lists - Apuly - 11-04-2014

We can have events running for longer periods of time, enabling for bigger projects to be made.

Also, wouldn't it be better to program a specific IS, instead of a specific cpu? Would make it so that nobody is disqualified.

RE: event lists - MelvinS4_ - 11-04-2014

Instruction sets are often cpu specific, so there should be no real difference? Someone would still have to come up with the IS to program and we still need a cpu using that IS to test the programs afterwards.

RE: event lists - Apuly - 11-04-2014

OR, and keep this in mind, google.

RE: event lists - LordDecapo - 11-04-2014

I'll check with other admins. If cool I'll claim a plot for this. I'm so game, I wanna help judge these,, I don't like doing small projects myself so I may not compete for a while. But I'll offer help: D

RE: event lists - greatgamer34 - 11-05-2014

I WANNA BUILD THE CPU!!!!

Ouch! xD

But I think a new CPU should be designed for this purpose. Preferably solid state so there are no piston derps.

RE: event lists - TSO - 11-06-2014

You should totally make it as an everyone build with minimal communication and a barely defined instruction set. Then the programmers have to guess the machine code too.

RE: event lists - Apuly - 11-06-2014

Sounds like a terrible idea

RE: event lists - TSO - 11-06-2014

For the programmer. It would still be hilarious to watch on YouTube.

RE: event lists - Apuly - 11-06-2014

Hilariously boring, yes.
Just an hour of somebody looking at something.

solid state! i think you should be able to have pistons. i just like some things better with pistons. it doesnt matter if it has pistons, if you think you can make a good running cpu with pistons, you should be allowed to do it.

Pistons are un reliable and can affect the turnout of the competition.

RE: event lists - TSO - 11-09-2014

It's a risk that competitors are willing to take

RE: event lists - PabloDons - 11-09-2014

you know, as long as there is no errors that doesn't seem to be caused by the program, all is well.

RE: event lists - TSO - 11-09-2014

But it can be difficult to determine that

RE: event lists - jxu - 11-10-2014

I'm in support of a best-looking device competition, as in the nicest UI for a computer or tic-tac-toe

I think competitors should have the freedom to use whatever concepts they wish. Either that, or segregate the competition into sub-compos for individual concepts such as torchless, pistonless etc
