Which linux distro you like the most! - EDevil - 12-12-2013

Freedom of speech!

Ow, btw, om a huge fan of Ubuntu. But that's just because it was my very first distro. I also am playing around with CentOS these days. Ultra-lightweight, and easy to use. Love it :3

Personally, I use bare debian on my latop/server and linux mint with GNOME3 on ze desktop.

Ubuntu is great for beginners but it can get really annoying (because of that fact). On the other hand, linux Mint is more or less a complete, stable and elegant desktop OS. (Debian + Ubuntu packages/support = Awesomesauce)

I love how high the security, cutting edge, and community is for Fedora.

RE: Which linux distro you like the most! - Tommyand - 04-27-2015

I actively use variants on Ubuntu on my machines, currently.

For a while, I tried using Kali Linux. I gave up, as software was too outdated.

I want to try Gentoo at some point. Or at least Arch. They both sound interesting... Tongue

RE: Which linux distro you like the most! - dylanrusell - 04-27-2015

Kali linux isn't suppose to be used for your main OS. It's meant for penetration testing and security auditing.

True, true. But you *can* install it and use it as your main, if you want.

But, it appears that I need a new distribution. Both Debian and Ubuntu have switched to systemd. And, however much momentum Ubuntu may carry by already being installed, it looks like it might be time to say goodbye. I noticed people mentioned Arch earlier... I want to try Arch, and I want to try Gentoo. Next? Possibly that fork of Debian for those people that didn't want blasted systemd on their system. Though, I will tolerate it for now.

RE: Which linux distro you like the most! - dylanrusell - 05-01-2015

Gentoo seems like a hassle since you have to compile everything yourself.

May I ask exactly what is your problem with systemd?  It's only being adopted by everyone because it's better than sysvinit.  (Not to presume you fall into this category) I've seen a lot of people who dismiss it because of internet hate but actually know nothing about systemd, which in urn turns more people away.

EDIT: Again, not to presume you're uneducated, but in case there are people in this thread who are, the following reddit thread is rather enlightening:

How interesting, I've actually seen that reddit post before. I also believe that nobody even uses sysvinit at all anymore, which is why things like Upstart are around. Anyway...

I don't hate systemd. I should've made that clear before. I disagree more in philosiphy, (and I am also not a fan of the decision to stop developing udev seperately...), in that I would prefer something like runit or daemontools. However, the fact that I am still running Ubuntu shows how strong of an opinion I have. (Not very)

However, this news has made me more interested than usual in finding something else.

As for Gentoo? It's only frustrating when you're compiling by hand. So far as I know. But there is time needed.
*shrugs*
