General Bot Guidelines - tyler569 - 07-30-2014

We've had quite a bit of grief over the issue of bots in recent months, and I've been throwing around some general guidelines in conversation, but I've been asked several times to write the down, so here they are.

In general, IRC and clientside bots should:
  1. Speak only when spoken to
  2. Speak only in private messages

I am aware the current IRC connector does not provide the functionality to use private messages, this will be worked on in the coming days/weeks depending on the build server's general situation.

Maybe have something about when you can have bots online? School today was a bad time because so many people were online, and some just kept wanting to keep adding bots.

I think Tyler's rules cover that nicely. If nobody talks to the bot, it should not be a bother

Does anyone remember when Xeo had a bot that would say random sentences maybe every 5 minutes?

Yup

It's really not that horrible. All you have to do is send the response back to the IRC user instead of the channel they're connected to. Then you have to add an extra case if the sender is ORESchool, OREBuild, etc. where you handle PM'ing Minecraft players. Not horrible at all.
