Possible reasons:
1) The Ubuntu devs got their calendar wrong and thought it was April 1st.
2) Microsoft has done "dealings" with canonical.
3) Microsoft released a brain-attacking virus on the Ubuntu devs.
4) Canonical secretly wanted this all along.

What do you make of this tragic event?

I think it's great that companies are working together to improve existing technologies.

Oooh no, a company has done business has done with another company! Surely the 'bad' company will turn the 'good' company to their evil ways.
