I personally would like to use Windows 8/9 for a gaming / media computer (because of its wide compatibility), and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS for development purposes (because of its low-level access, but simple interface and long-term support if I screw it up while devving). HOWEVER, if I had to choose one OS, I would choose Windows 7, because 1) I have more experience using that interface, 2) Powerful yet easy to use, and 3) Wide compatibility with a variety of programs (something that I didn't like about Linux is that lots of companies like Autodesk don't take the time to support it)
