The PilotBoard: A project CPU for learning purposes - Epic_SkyPilot - 04-04-2014

As most of you may know by now, I love teaching on the school server. But within the past few days I realized that most of the students around are rather advanced than what I'm used to. Normally I'd just start off teaching binary and logic gates, but a majority already know these, and adders!

So, I decided that I'd start teaching full CPUs, and not just their components. I've gotten many requests to do this by students, mainly in this past week. And that, is when I decided to start on the PilotBoard!

It's going to be the traditional, simple architecture, but the interesting thing is it'll be build on an actual motherboard template I will make soon. So the idea is, for the ALU portion of the board you can swap it out and put in your own ALU. Then all you have to do is attach it's inputs/outputs to the correct lines, which will also be marked.

I think this would be a great way to teach students how to make their own CPUs with their own components. I'm really excited to get started, and I'll update this post regularly, but I need some help from you guys!

I'd just like help on the board layout. And like I said, it'll be simple ALU->Reg->ALU architecture, since that's the easiest form to learn with, at least from my experience. Later today I'm going to get started on my school plot, but if anyone wishes to help me I'd appreciate it greatly! So thanks for reading guys, I can't wait for this to be up and running.

As I recall Mort was working on a similar project at some time on the RDF, you should try interrogating him about it.

I love this idea!
Hurray for moduler designs
So ur pretty much just gonna have a 'bussing board'? That u can plug and play components to?
Great way to learn!

I think I've started on this idea about three times, I've never finished any of them though Tongue.
