Help in serial?!? - EDevil - 05-21-2013

So, i want to get into serial redstoning.

I know what it is, and that it really isn't that hard to learn, but i want some good information, therefore i think the school server is perfect. Just want to learn how to build a encoder & decoder, what are the tips & tricks etc.

So, you want to teach me serial? Leave a post below Big Grin (btw, i know i could just ask it in game, any many friendly players will help me. Just thought of trying the new forum section, someones gotta create the first topic)

Serial is very simple. When you deal with lines of redstone that run next to one another, that is called parallel. When your bits are separated by time rather than space, it is serial. Serial is commonly used for data transfer, and not much else. It is useful because it allows the use of a single line rather than very large multi-line cables. The key components of using serial are the serial encoder and the serial decoder. A serial encoder takes bits in parallel and converts them to on and off pulses on a single line at a regular interval. A serial decoder takes these pulses and converts them to parallel. This can be done in a number of different ways, but hopefully this is enough to get you started.

Are there any good (noob-friendly) examples on the MinecraftORE server of an encoder & decoder?

I can make you one tomorrow, today i'm very busy and can't come on (last day of finals)

RE: Help in serial?!? - CMOSprinkles - 06-08-2013

The thing that is difficult about serial is that the timing is a nightmare to work with. I built a serial decoder and encoder for a SIPO (serial in-parallel out) shift register I was using, so they can be pretty useful. They get big pretty quick, so keeping them compact is the real challenge.
