This is exactly how I feel about redstone!
Its great fun and all, but there are some really important real world concepts which you just can't replicate in minecraft.
@cutlass, If you are looking at fpga's, Diligent sells an fpga development board called the nexys 4 with onboard cellular sdram and a nice big fat artix-7 fpga, perfect for cpu prototyping, fairly decent student discount on it too

Good luck with whatever you wanna do, either it is a processor with logisim or a multi-million job filling from AMD/INTEL.
Or better, create your own damn chipset manufacturer (HC??)
