Build Off - Ideas Thread - LordDecapo - 05-16-2018

It's that time again! Given that summer is here (or soon to be here), many of you will have more free time and the server activity ramps up around this time of year. Soo... we are gonna do more build offs!

My goal with this thread is to assemble a list of good build off ideas and schedule them to be done monthly for the next few months.

Please post your ideas for build offs below. As well as vote in the poll for the time that works for you best.

I was thinking we do a "most dumb way of doing ----" but id just love to see what crazy ideas we get  lol

Here's an idea for you: A 1-wide CPU

Best sequential arithmetic build sounds like it could be fun.

RE: Build Off - Ideas Thread - EEVV - 05-17-2018

Networks, encryption?

RE: Build Off - Ideas Thread - EEVV - 05-17-2018

That's not a very good buildoff in my opinion, because you can't objectively measure "dumbness".

Teamwork Competition (cpu or something)?
*teams of 2, plan build before comp
*1 hour for 1 member to build, then another hour for the other member to complete the build, no communication between team during the 2 hours of building
*5 mins at end for team to debug together

DPOL speedbuilding
*spin wheel randomly selects build
*people then get 2 mins to copy as many parts as they can / need to the're build area from dpol to make the build.
*time limit is low enough to make getting premade parts needed to win?

Branch Predictor build?
*whoever's predictor is most accurate wins?

I like these...
Branch predictor tho.. i would want to make a standardized testing system.. so a preset ROM that ran the same set of branches and code on a given test CPU... so all ppl do is plug in there predictors and compare total run time

RE: Build Off - Ideas Thread - Computteren - 05-17-2018

+1 for Matthew's idea. I love it!

RE: Build Off - Ideas Thread - JeremyG - 05-17-2018

I also like the branch predictor idea. Just make sure nobody can game the system by knowing beforehand what the preset ROM is.

I think all worksfor me!    Big Grin

math ofc - HyperXti - 06-22-2018

It should be math related: Computing logarithms or non-integer exponents.
Higher precision and speed gives higher score
